Australia is on the brink of a major shift in entrepreneurship, with a new plan that could unlock up to $135 billion in economic value over the next decade by harnessing the potential of women-led businesses. The Future Female Entrepreneurship and Business Leadership Decadal Plan offers a clear, actionable roadmap to level the playing field for women and spark real change in the business world.
Launched on October 9, 2024, at the Kickstarter Challenge Grand Final in Canberra, the Decadal Plan sets out a bold vision for supporting female entrepreneurs and driving transformation. Developed by a panel of 12 business and policy leaders, it draws from the experiences of women entrepreneurs and aims to reshape Australia’s economy over the next ten years.
The Decadal Plan is built on three core components:
But as Future Female Entrepreneurs Program Director Fleur Anderson emphasises, “This isn’t about ‘fixing women’—it’s about fixing the system. Women already know the barriers to starting or growing a business. It’s time to help organisations and institutions tap into the economic and social potential of women entrepreneurs.”
The recommendations in the Decadal Plan focus on removing barriers and opening doors for women entrepreneurs.
Creating women-led business hubs inspired by programs like Audible’s “Live Local.”
Supporting micro-businesses started by women, particularly those escaping domestic violence.
Reforming procurement practices to increase opportunities for women-led businesses.
Empowering educators to nurture entrepreneurial talent in young girls.
The Decadal Plan is part of the broader Enterprising ME initiative, which equips women and girls across Australia with the tools and resources they need to start and grow businesses. Our program, delivered in partnership with COSBOA, is funded through the Australian Government’s Women’s Leadership and Development Program and is free to all women and girls in Australia.
“This plan has the potential to radically reshape the entrepreneurial landscape for women in Australia by driving collaboration and accountability,” says COSBOA CEO Luke Achterstraat. “It’s a powerful call to action to unlock the untapped potential of women entrepreneurs.”
The future of female entrepreneurship in Australia is bright. With the support of the Decadal Plan, we can look forward to a decade of innovation, equality, and economic growth driven by the next generation of women entrepreneurs.
